Bowl-a-thon for the Empty bowls project
Join RRCC and the North Austin pottery community in helping support the Austin Empty Bowls Project
Service Description
We would like to invite potters that have wheel throwing experience to join us in a bowl a thon. All bowls made will be donated to the Austin empty bowls project. Bowls can be trimmed on a Tuesday or Thursday 5:30-8:30pm within a week of the bowl a thon, or left to be trimmed by RRCC. All clay, glazing and firing will be covered by RRCC, but we need volunteers to make the bowls! We have 10 wheels, so have limited each session to 10 volunteers. Bowl-Making Guidelines 1. Bowls can be hand built or thrown on the wheel. 2. In general, 1 1/2 lbs. to 2 lbs. of clay will make a good sized bowl. This is a rough guideline. 3. In general, the bowl dimensions when wet, should be a minimum 5 inches wide up to about 8 inches wide. Height can vary. 4. The bowl shape needs to be such that it can contain soup. Ideally they should hold a minimum of 8 ounces of liquid. Here are some examples: a. A typical cereal bowl, chili bowl or ramen bowl shape. b. Soup mugs c. Bowls with feet (as long as the form is stable) d. Bowls with an altered rim or altered from a round shape. 5. The bowls shall be finished with a durable and food safe glaze on the inside of the bowl or anywhere that food may touch the bowl, like the rim. 6. Unglazed bowls or bowls exposing raw clay on inside surfaces cannot be used and will not be available for AEBP customers. Raw unglazed clay surfaces on the bowl exteriors is fine. 7. Bowls should be signed "AEBP" or "Austin Empty Bowl". No dates when signing the bowl. Other information, such as the potter's name, clay type, etc. is optional.
